Serene Places Feed Your Soul

Have you ever felt like things in general were simply closing in on you?
I think that comes from all of life's pressures, and schedules, and our need to be super woman.

I found myself needing to calm my surroundings.....
Purge some of my collections
and create a calming space for my soul.
People that know me will find this very ironic
inasmuch as my mantra has always been "more is not enough".

and believe me, I still love "my stuff",
i just need easy right now.
So, I looked around my "spaces" to see what my surroundings were doing to my overall well being.
And started on my bedroom.......

I had been auditioning this fabulous antique French chair for months now.
trying to determine how to upholster and what to use.
Imagine my delight when I simply removed the silk damask on the back and loved the way it looked.
The fan I have to have running year 'round has also become part of the decor...and I like it.
My big girl statue came in from the backyard.
The white dogs knocked it over one too many times and
I was afraid of damage....she's now very safe next to my bed
On top of my  husband's Mother's dresser that I use as a nightstand.
I'm certain it would make her smile to know how much I love this piece.

And my Grandmother's silver lidded vanity jars.....

And just to show you that even I compromise about my decor....
A HUGE flatscreen TV above the fireplace right in front of the bed....

A large 20"glass decanter full of antique white buttons.
My daughter used this piece at her wedding full of pink jelly belly beans,
and I think of that day each time I see it..

And, then there's the bed.
All whites, all cushy, and my sanctuary.
My husband brought these home 30 years ago.
Just two matching double antique iron beds,
pushed side by side so everyone has plenty of room...
and by everyone....I mean the dogs and cats:)

Of course, it didn't look like this last week.
The bedroom was full of color, with the walls yellow,
The drapes and duvets a Waverly golden rose pattern,
and much clutter.

It's not to say it wasn't beautiful,
Just started to close in on me.
There is still much to do in the bedroom.
The walls have to be finished with the new paint called "oatmeal"....
I'm pretty sure my lil'mama would call it "beige".
But I know oatmeal is healthier for me :)
I'm just as surprised about this change as anyone that knows me is.

Thanks for stopping by today...
You know I love it when you come.

  1. Lots of patterns and colour is great in the cooler months (which is where I'm headed). I'm loving whites and neutrals. I love what you've done with your bedroom, it really looks like a peaceful sanctuary. I thougth it was great that you didn't have to do anything major with the chair. It's nice to have things that don't require so much work when there's a lot of other things going on. I get overwhelmed purely from the renovations we are doing, and the furniture and projects I keep bringing home to redo, so I need a calm serene space.

    Thanks for sharing your changes.

  3. Hi Jana,
I keep forgetting to tell you how much I love the photo of you with your girls. It's so pretty.

I also love the changes that you made in your bedroom. My bedroom is also done in creams and whites. I love your gorgeous bedding too.

I think it's time for me to start purging some stuff myself. I also love the french chair.

  4. I LOVE patterns and color too- as anyone can tell by my wallpaper and rest of my decorating style. But I'm feeling more like you lately although I haven't taken the plunge yet!

Love the new look all dreamy soft and yummy.

  5. Great photos and I enjoyed your post. I always think I have too much as well. But then when it comes to re-decorating something, there is always plenty of "stuff" on hand to do a little makeover.

    Take care, Sue
